Making tattoos on arm or back has become a fashion now. However, according to some research made, it has been found out that symbols like cave paintings and carvings are considered as the earliest forms of communication. Even though in recent time, the modern way of communication is used, still symbolism plays an important role in our daily life. Some tattoo designs have deep significance depending on personal lifestyle and individual belief. When you look at the design of the tattoo, surely the question of symbolism arises. There is meaning to every symbol, which you plan to design.

Let us check out some examples of the popular tattoo designs and their meanings.

1. Religious/spiritual symbols

Religious spiritual symbols

If you are planning to make a tattoo of a symbol of some religion on your body, which you are not familiar with, then I would advise you to make some research on it. It would be stupid to represent the culture of which you are not aware of but also somewhere you might find that the religious beliefs are contrary to your own. Making such tattoo can be sometimes an insult for other people who follow this religion.

2. Hindu symbol like swastika

Hindu symbol swastika

The Hindu sign swastika is similar to the Nazi emblem, which has a great significance among Hindus. It is not a letter but a pictorial character, which you will find the most during religious festivals and celebrations. It also symbolizes the eternal nature of the Brahman and represents the omnipresence of the Absolute.

3. Pagan and Wiccan symbols

Pagan and Wiccan symbol

In modern days, the symbol of paganism and Wicca is used by many people. It is a sign of magic or rituality. Some signs represent elements and positive hopes as well.

4. Pirate flags

Pirate flag

Pirates are also part of our history. The sign of pirates has become an inspiration today. One popular tattoo of Jolly Roger is common among many people, while some signs are made to threaten the people.

5. Buddhist symbols

Buddhist symbol

In Buddhist art, there are some images that symbolize the Buddha and his teachings. Signs like the Wheel of the Law, Buddha’s footprints, lotus, five colors of white, yellow, red, blue and green, Hand gestures called Mudras are common and popular today. Buddhist symbolism shows the culture of this religion and its pureness. All these signs are considered as a rich symbolic tradition.

6. The cross

The cross

The cross is one popular and common tattoo design, which you will find in many people’s body. It is well known of all Christian symbols. It symbolizes the Christ’s death upon a cross and is regarded as a cruel instrument of execution. It is a symbol for the believer, a beautiful statement of hope and faith.

Most of other tattoo designs are simply symbols with no meaning and are made just for entertainment purposes. If you want to make something and have the reason of wanting it then surely go with it. There are less people who actually make a tattoo of certain sign or symbol keeping the meaning behind it in the mind.
